Putting the kids to work!

This last year I've tried a few times to have a system for the boys to help out around here. Most of them fizzled out when I got bored of them and I think that going through so many changes also made it hard to stay consistent. Not wanting to pay the boys to do things that are just part of being in this family it was hard to find a good motivator for them. One Saturday a few weeks ago as I was arguing with Brendan about how much Mario he could play I had a great idea! Instead of earning money for their chores they can earn time on the computer/video games (WEEKENDS only!!) The amount of time they earn is totally up to them and I'm no longer the bad guy when time is up. Yay!  I went to the dollar store and got a few mason jars, some toy tokens, and 2 small white boards. Each chore they do they earn 1 token which is worth 10 minutes of game time. So far its going great! I picked a small list of chores I thought they could easily handle at their age every day and a few that only need to be done a couple times a week.  So far I think the hardest thing is not doing the chores for them while they are at school and I'm doing my thing around the house. Ha! Brendan's job everyday is to empty the dishwasher and its hard for me to let it just sit there full of clean dishes especially when I have a sink full of dirty ones but I've been strong so far.

It cracks me up to see them doing their chores and some of the funny ways they go about them. The important thing is they get done I guess!

Carters turn to wash the table after dinner.....

Brendan likes to build interesting towers with the clean dishes from the dishwasher. What a goof
