My first cooking post! Woohoo! I am not much of a cook so these will be few and far between but I wanted to share something I'm trying out recently.
HOMEMADE INSTANT OATMEAL
I love a hot bowl of oatmeal in the morning and right now thats Ethan's favorite as well. He can't get enough. We are going broke buying that stuff though plus who knows whats actually in it. We are trying hard to cut out processed stuff so I'm giving this a go and seeing how we like it. I just made it today and so far myself and Ethan are fans! I think I might have to work on the older boys though. They only like their oatmeal with candy dinosaurs in them but mama isn't going to be buying that anymore so they better get used to this.
So anyways, this is super easy which I love. I did some online research and kind of narrowed down the different recipes to what worked for us. Feel free to tweak however you like! I'm pretty picky about my oatmeal so this is how I like it.
Ingredients:
1 18 oz container of quick cook oats
1/3 cup dry powdered milk
1/2 cup (I did more like 3/4 we like it a little sweeter) brown sugar
1-2 tsp of ground cinnamon
Raisins, dried fruit, etc. Whatever you like! Add it in there (we didn't have anything and prefer it plain and simple most of the time)
1 big container with a lid to mix/store it all in. I saved a large container of sherbet from a party recently and it works great!
Mix all together.
Add instructions: Customize for your own taste. This is up to you! Add more/less water or milk depending on the consistency you like.
There you have it. I don't know how long this will last us but I know that it will save us quite a bit. I already had the cinnamon and brown sugar so all I had to buy was the quick oats which was about $3 and the powdered milk which was also around $3. So $6! I'll be using the powdered milk for a long time and just adding the $3 oatmeal each time I make a batch. Plus you know that there aren't a bunch of extra preservatives and chemicals you don't know the name of in there.
I'm excited for my oatmeal tomorrow morning!
Charlie doesn't eat oatmeal? Your recipe sounds yummy and the powdered milk, your new addition to the family will love it
ReplyDeleteCharlie does eat oatmeal but he likes WAY different oatmeal then the rest of us. I like the froofroo kind out of the box and so do the kids. Charlie likes his more hearty and as thick as cement. LOL :) so he makes his own when he feels like eating it and I make it for the rest of us "normal" ones. Ha!
