Ethan Robert

Ethan Robert

Wow, where to begin? I guess I'll start off with his crazy whirlwind arrival. At 38 1/2 weeks pregnant we knew that our newest little man could arrive really any day now. I'd been having contractions and was probably 3 cm dilated at my 38 week appointment so my body was definitely getting ready. We didn't know though what God was going to walk with us through. Sunday December 19th,  I was woken up by Brendan coming in our bed in the wee hours of the morning . This is normal for either one of the boys to join us for a bit before being put back in bed. For some reason, I decided to just get up and sleep on the couch and let Brendan stay in our bed since we'd be getting up in a few hours for church. I slept a few hours before waking up and thinking I had wet the bed! Oh no! my water broke! hooray! I woke up Charlie and called a friend of mine to come watch Carter and Brendan since my mom was out of town for the weekend. Called the hospital and let them know we were on our way! We were just so excited and nervous. Definitely not prepared though. You'd think this being our 3rd we'd have bags packed by the door but no, so we scrambled around throwing this and that in a bag and figured if we forgot anything Charlie could come home and get it. I noticed that there was some meconium in the water and figured we'd let the nurses know when we got to the hospital. Of we went at 6:30 am. For the suddenness we were oddly laid back. We even went through a drive thru for Charlie to get some breakfast. ha! Checked in at the hospital about 7 am. They hooked me up to the monitors and we were ready for this. Contractions increased in frequency and pain level on the way from the house to the hospital so we knew this was the real thing, even though the nurses weren't sure my water really broke. My midwife didn't know we were there yet but one of the OB doctors was in checking on one of his patients so he nicely dropped by to say hi and see how things were going. After about 30 min of being on the monitor he came in to let me know that things weren't looking so great. Ethan's heart rate would drop severely every time I had a contraction. Now, its normal for the heart rate to drop a bit but I guess his was getting in the danger zone. He told me I should probably expect to have C-section if things didn't improve. I was determined this was not going to happen. I wanted another VBAC! So we tried everything...extra oxygen, different positions...and nothing worked. The decision was made, get Ethan out ASAP. They just knew that things weren't right. Even though I was bummed I had a peace about it and knew that this was the best thing for my baby. The doctors and nurses worked quickly and at 8:29 am Sunday December 19th, my littlest precious boy was born! Weighing in at a mere 5 lbs 10 oz. As soon as he was out they knew something was wrong. He wasn't breathing and his heart was not beating. They got his heart beating and oxygen on him and whisked him in to the NICU room adjacent to the operating room. I was so scared. What was wrong with my baby?? Why was he so tiny? He wasn't that early. I was so confused and could only pray that everything would be okay. After Ethan and I were both stabilized I finally got to get a peek. Oh, he was so tiny and frail and it was so sad to see him all covered in wires and tubes. After my quick peek he was taken away to get settled in his room at the NICU. And the adventure was just getting started.....
