One of my favorite things about summer is all the fresh and yummy fruit that is FINALLY in season. The strawberries, peaches, watermelon, cantaloupe, cherries, and my favorite....
BLUEBERRIES!
The past few weeks I've seen/heard about all my friends going to U-Pick farms and filling their freezers and bellies with the delicious little pieces of summer. I have been wanting to go to the farms myself but don't really want to drag 3 kids with me in the hot sun and it hasn't worked out to go without them either. SO it has been killing me!! BUT...my patience finally paid off last week. My mom discovered a home in her neighborhood with a huge crop of blueberries that aren't being picked. For some reason the owner of the home isn't really there and isn't able to pick the berries herself so my mom made sure it was okay to pick them for our own enjoyment. Last week she watched Brendan and Carter for me while I picked berries like no ones business. Ethan was napping part of the time in the car but woke up in time do do a little quality control and keep me entertained while I was picking. I picked for almost 2 hours and filled many many containers. Don't know exactly how much I picked but my freezer and belly is now FULL and very happy. I'm so glad I was forced to wait and now I got all those berries for free! Sweet!

ReplyDeleteWe just went blueberry picking a few days ago.
We used to own a blueberry farm, and our favorite recipe that I created was Apple/Blueberry Pie. Oh my! I make it all year long with the blueberries we freeze in the summer. Just put a layer of blueberries over each layer of apples in the pie.

Oh that pie sounds great!! I'm the only one in my house that eats pie so I hardly make it but the next pie I make this coming holiday season will probably be a blueberry/apple! Sounds so amazing!
