Can we just skip Halloween next year???

This year Charlie and I did a lot of thinking about the "holiday" of Halloween and found that it wasn't something we really want to get our kids involved in. Now...we think fall carnivals at church are great and its cute to dress up in fun costumes but there is a dark side of Halloween that we really don't want our kids a part of. I really would rather just skip the whole night altogether but you can't. It is all around us and the best thing we can do is explain to our kids and answer their questions.

Friday I took the boys to the nursing home where I used to work. The residents there LOVE it when the kids come all dressed up and you're guaranteed to get some good loot. I hadn't been there in a YEAR..wow...that was weird. Everyone was so excited to see Carter and how much Brendan had grown. I was sad to see a few special patients had passed on and felt a little regretful about not coming to visit sooner...sigh.....
Brendan was a little unsure of what to do...but sure loved the candy! We went with my friend Autumn and her son Nathan. Both boys had fun and it was a good visit.

That night we went to a small mall (J beach) that has a carousel because Autumn told me they were doing free rides and "trick or treating". Well, the free rides were great. We only ended up taking one since I think we got there at the tail-end of the celebration. I was really upset there were SO many gory costumes and evilness there. Brendan was pretty scared and he should be. I don't want him to be desensitized. There is evil out there and it bugs me that so many people think it is so funny to dress up in evilness and make light of it. Ugh...being a parent really opens my eyes to what is around me!

After the mall we went home and Brendan was in bed, asleep by 7:30. He had skipped a nap because of the trip to the nursing home so he was pretty pooped. Charlie and I turned off the porch light and watched a movie. No kids came by so we were happy :)

Thank goodness it is all over! Now on to the TRUE holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas!

  1. We went to the mall a few days prior to Halloween because Maddie loves the carousel. A lady dressed up in a nasty, ugly costume actually stuck her face in Madeline's and started to make scary sounds. I stuck my hand in between her face and Madeline's and snapped "Absolutely not, go away." She flipped me off, but I don't really care. I was so angry that she would do that to a little girl! I hate the gore too...why not just allow it to be fun and keep the gore where only adults can see it!
